Platelet-Fibrin Products Provide a Natural Framework
Platelet-fibrin products, or PFP, are blood-based preparations that may include platelet-rich fibrin. The exact preparation method can vary.
These products contain platelets along with fibrin. Fibrin is a natural protein involved in blood clotting and wound healing. It can form a soft framework that helps hold platelets and healing signals near the treatment area.
A provider may consider a platelet-fibrin product when seeking:
- A natural fibrin framework
- A gradual release of platelet signals
- Support for an injured tendon or ligament
- A treatment made from the patient’s own blood
- Additional support for a slow-healing injury
Platelet-fibrin products should not be described as guaranteed tissue rebuilding. The response can depend on the type of injury, the preparation process, injection accuracy, the patient’s health, and the rehabilitation plan.
In a combined plan, chiropractic care improves the movement surrounding the injured structure while the platelet-fibrin product supports the local healing environment.
MFAT Uses the Patient’s Own Adipose Tissue
Microfragmented adipose tissue is commonly known as MFAT. This treatment uses a small amount of the patient’s own fat tissue.
The tissue is usually collected from the abdomen or side through a small medical procedure. It is then cleaned and mechanically processed into tiny pieces before being placed into an injured joint or soft-tissue area.
Adipose tissue contains:
- Structural material
- Small blood vessels
- Signaling molecules
- Different types of cells
- Natural supportive tissue
MFAT is being studied for its possible role in managing inflammation and supporting the environment around damaged joint tissue.
It may be considered for selected patients with:
- Knee osteoarthritis
- Cartilage damage
- Ongoing joint discomfort
- Moderate or advanced joint degeneration
- Injuries that did not improve with simpler care
MFAT is not automatically better than PRP. In a randomized study of people with knee osteoarthritis, both PRP and MFAT produced meaningful improvement after six months. The researchers did not find an important difference between the two groups (Baria et al., 2022).
This finding shows why treatment should be based on the patient’s individual needs. PRP is collected through a blood draw. MFAT requires a small fat-harvesting procedure. A qualified medical professional should explain the benefits, limits, costs, risks, and expected recovery process of each option.
Epidural Injections Target Irritated Spinal Nerves
An epidural injection places medication or another selected substance into the space around the spinal nerves. These procedures may be considered when a herniated disc, disc protrusion, spinal narrowing, or another condition irritates a nerve root.
An irritated spinal nerve may cause:
- Neck pain
- Lower-back pain

- Pain traveling into an arm or leg
- Numbness
- Tingling

A traditional epidural steroid injection uses a corticosteroid to reduce inflammation around the affected nerve. Its main purpose is to calm nerve irritation. It does not rebuild a torn ligament, tendon, or spinal disc.
Some medical providers also perform platelet-based epidural procedures. Research in this area is still developing.
A 2025 meta-analysis found that epidural PRP produced pain and functional results comparable to epidural steroid injections in the studies reviewed. However, the researchers also found important differences between the studies. Stronger and more consistent research is needed before broad conclusions can be made (Muthu et al., 2025).
Reducing nerve irritation may help a patient sleep, walk, work, and participate in rehabilitation more comfortably. The injection should still be connected to a larger plan that addresses posture, strength, movement, and the cause of the nerve irritation.
