Abstract

Whiplash and back injuries can affect the spinal joints, muscles, ligaments, discs, and nerves. Because several structures may be injured at the same time, one treatment may not address every problem. Integrative chiropractic care focuses on restoring joint movement, reducing muscle tension, improving posture, and rebuilding physical function. Epidural spinal injections may reduce inflammation around irritated spinal nerve roots, especially when a herniated disc causes sciatica or pain that travels into an arm or leg.

Rebuilding Physical Function

Pain relief is important, but lasting recovery usually requires improved function. Rehabilitation helps patients rebuild the strength, stability, flexibility, and coordination that may have been lost after an injury.

A patient’s rehabilitation program may focus on:

  • Neck and back stability
  • Core strength
  • Hip mobility
  • Shoulder movement
  • Proper lifting
  • Walking mechanics
  • Safe return to work
  • Gradual return to exercise

How Epidural Spinal Injections Help

An epidural spinal injection places medicine into the epidural space near an irritated spinal nerve root. The injection commonly contains a corticosteroid medication that reduces inflammation. A local anesthetic may also be included for temporary numbing relief.

Houston Pain Specialists explains that epidural injections may reduce inflammation caused by a herniated disc after a car accident. The resulting pain relief may make physical therapy and chiropractic treatment easier for the patient to tolerate (Houston Pain Specialists, 2023).

Dr. Eric Fanaee also describes epidural steroid injections as targeted treatments that place anti-inflammatory medicine near painful spinal nerve roots instead of sending the medication throughout the entire body (Fanaee, 2021).

What the Research Says About Epidural Injections

Epidural steroid injections do not produce the same results for every patient. The benefits depend on the diagnosis, the location of the nerve irritation, the severity of the condition, and the patient’s overall health.

A 2025 systematic review from the American Academy of Neurology found that epidural steroid injections may provide limited or modest short-term improvement in pain and disability for some people with cervical or lumbar radiculopathy. Long-term benefits are less certain (Armon et al., 2025).

This means an epidural should not be viewed as a guaranteed cure. Instead, it may be one part of a larger recovery plan.

The epidural injection may help:
