A small amount of the patient’s blood is collected and processed. This separates and concentrates platelets before the preparation is injected into or around a selected injured area.

Platelets contain proteins and signaling molecules involved in the body’s normal response to injury.

PRP may be considered for selected problems involving:

  • Tendons
  • Ligaments
  • Muscles
  • Arthritic joints
  • Certain sports-related soft-tissue injuries

However, PRP does not guarantee that damaged tissue will completely regenerate.

Research results depend on the injury, PRP preparation, injection technique, rehabilitation program, and individual patient.

A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis involving athletes with acute muscle injuries found that PRP was associated with a faster return to sport, with an average difference of about 7.5 days. However, the authors also rated the overall quality of evidence as limited and recommended caution when interpreting the results (Bensa et al., 2026).

Another 2026 review found that PRP may reduce reinjury risk in acute muscle injuries, but improvement in return-to-sport time did not reach statistical significance in that analysis (Kobayashi et al., 2026). These different findings show why PRP should be recommended based on the individual injury rather than treated as a universal solution.

Does PRP Mean Less Training Downtime?

Possibly, but athletes should be cautious.

Having less pain after an injection does not always mean the tissue is ready for full-speed running, jumping, cutting, throwing, or heavy lifting.

Return to sport may depend on:

  • Pain levels
  • Swelling
  • Strength
  • Range of motion
  • Joint stability
  • Tissue involved
  • Imaging findings
  • Sport-specific testing
  • Response to progressive exercise

The athlete still needs rehabilitation.

The goal is not simply to return quickly. It is to return with enough strength, mobility, and control to handle the demands of the sport.


What Are PFP Platelet-Fibrin Products?

Another term athletes may hear is PFP, or platelet-fibrin products.

Some regenerative practices use this term to describe blood-derived preparations that combine platelet-related signaling substances with a fibrin framework.

Fibrin normally helps form a structure during the body’s healing response. In platelet-fibrin preparations, that framework may help keep platelet-related components near a treatment site.

However, there is an important point to understand:

PFP is not one single standardized product.

Preparation methods and terminology may differ between clinics.

Wellness Doctor RX educational materials discuss PRP and platelet-fibrin approaches as possible parts of regenerative care, but they are not presented as replacements for accurate diagnosis, rehabilitation, or appropriate medical care.

Microfragmented adipose tissue, or MFAT, uses a person’s own fat tissue.

A small amount of adipose tissue is collected and mechanically processed before being used in a selected orthopedic treatment area.

MFAT has received attention for knee osteoarthritis and other joint conditions, but research is still developing.

For example, one randomized controlled study found improvements in pain and function after MFAT for knee osteoarthritis compared with saline (Richter et al., 2025).

However, another randomized trial with two-year follow-up found that MFAT was not superior to saline placebo for knee osteoarthritis (Barfod et al., 2025).

This is a good example of why regenerative wellness should remain evidence-informed.

MFAT may be considered in selected cases, but a larger or more involved procedure does not automatically mean a better outcome.

Athletes should discuss potential benefits, costs, recovery time, alternatives, and current evidence before deciding whether it fits their care plan.


IV Infusion Therapy and Athletic Recovery

IV infusion therapy is another popular topic among athletes.

An IV places fluid directly into a vein. Depending on the clinical reason, an infusion may contain fluids, electrolytes, vitamins, or other medically selected ingredients.

In a functional wellness setting, IV therapy may be considered when there is a specific medical or nutritional reason for using it.

But an IV should not replace the basics of recovery:

  • Water and electrolytes
  • Adequate calories
  • Protein
  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Healthy fats
  • Quality sleep
  • Proper training
  • Rest and recovery

Peptides are chains of amino acids that can function as signaling molecules in the body.

The word peptide, however, includes many very different substances.

Some peptide-based medications have accepted medical uses. Other peptides promoted online for muscle growth, recovery, fat loss, or tissue repair have very limited human research.

This distinction is especially important for athletes.

For example, BPC-157 is prohibited by WADA under the category for non-approved substances. USADA has warned athletes that BPC-157 is experimental and prohibited in competitive sport.

The FDA has also identified safety concerns or major gaps in human safety data for several compounded peptides, including:

  • BPC-157
  • CJC-1295
  • Ipamorelin
  • MOTS-c
  • Injectable GHK-Cu
  • Several other experimental peptides

For CJC-1295, FDA information notes limited clinical data and reports of serious adverse events. The agency has also identified concerns involving immunogenicity, impurities, and limited safety information for several other compounded peptides.

For athletes, the safest rule is simple:

Never assume a therapy is permitted simply because it is prescribed, compounded, advertised as natural, or offered through a wellness clinic.

Athletes should check current WADA, USADA, sport federation, league, or Global DRO rules before using a peptide.
