A solitary supercomputer floating in your head is not the brain. Comprising blood arteries, muscles, joints, nerves, the heart, lungs, the stomach, and the immune system, it is the conductor of a living symphony. An electrical impulse originates in your brain or spinal cord and powers every single heartbeat, breath, stride, thought, emotion, and immunological reaction. You feel resilient, energized, and attuned when this conductor is in good health. The whole symphony malfunctions when it is inflamed, agitated, misaligned, or chemically unbalanced, resulting in headaches, chronic tiredness, brain fog, shaky muscles, restless nights, digestive issues, and pain that appears to originate everywhere and nowhere at once.

Your brain weighs only about three pounds, yet it uses 20–25% of your body’s total energy every day (Cleveland Clinic, 2024a). Inside are roughly 86 billion neurons and an even larger number of support cells called glia. Neurons send lightning-fast electrical signals that travel down the spinal cord and out through peripheral nerves to every corner of the body (Kandel et al., 2021).
