Achieving Wellness with Physical Activity

Chiropractic treatment is used to treat soft-tissue injuries or conditions by rehabilitating the body naturally to its original state and function as well as relieving pain and other symptoms. For chiropractors, teaching individuals how to prevent injuries and maintain their health during physical activity is an important element towards achieving overall wellness.

Before starting any form of physical activity, its essential to warm up and stretch the body. A simple routine consisting of low or no impact exercises and stretches will help heat up the muscles and increase your heart rate in preparation for the next workout. Complete body movements, such as leg lunges together with arm motion or walking in place while raising and lowering the arms, are great choices to trigger the muscles across the entire body into action. After warming up the body and stretching, the individual can continue through to their set of more strenuous exercises.

Also, choosing a proper pair of footwear is important before starting any form of physical activity. A suitable pair of shoes should provide good stability, flexibility, and comfort for the individual. These should fit firmly throughout the individual’s whole range of motion in order to support a balanced gait during wear. Footwear should also be flexible and well cushioned as well as offer enough space for the toes to move. Properly fitting shoes can help an individual move more naturally throughout any physical activity to avoid possible injuries.

Being able to correctly perform a series of exercises by improving or maintaining a proper posture is especially important for individuals to prevent the development of injuries or conditions and building strong muscles can help. When the muscles are strong and flexible, these can help promote a healthier posture by releasing the overly tight and stiff muscles that are pulling an individual out of the correct posture. An improper posture, both while sitting for extended periods of time or participating in physical activity, can often lead to injury but fixing your posture by strengthening the muscles is a great way to avoid harm and promote health.

And finally, focusing on stretching and exercising large muscle groups with passive exercises to gently relieve pressure points that could be causing symptoms of pain and discomfort. Slowly stretching the hamstrings, piriformis, and the entire back can provide an individual with relief after participating in strenuous physical activity.

Before attempting any form of physical activity or exercise, especially if you’ve experienced a prior injury or condition, it’s important to consult a chiropractor or other medical specialist to determine an appropriate workout routine to prevent, maintain, or improve an individual’s fitness, health, and overall wellness.
