Ankle Arthritis: A Brief Overview

1,604

This article provides a brief overview of ankle osteoarthritis and what sets it apart from osteoarthritis of the hip and knee.

Research shows that post-traumatic arthritis of the ankle can begin to develop after a variety of different types of ankle fractures. If a person injures the fibula, tibia, tibial plafond (the ‘roof’ that is covering the talus) or the talus itself, post-traumatic osteoarthritis can develop. Specific fractures are associated with very high rates of post-traumatic osteoarthritis due to the degree of injury to the cartilage.

Osteoarthritis of the ankle is far less common than osteoarthritis of the knee or hip. This condition most frequently develops from a previous injury, such as ankle fractures, which are known as the most common reason for developing arthritis of the ankle joint.
